A Christmas That Starts a Little Early

Leave a comment Standard

Christmas at our house doesn’t happen exactly the way the calendar says it should.

It never really has.

For us, Christmas usually starts a little early. Sometimes on Christmas Eve. Sometimes even before that. Not because we’re rushing the season, but because our family has learned that love often means adjusting the schedule.

Ell’s birthday is on Christmas Day, and from the beginning we’ve tried to protect that. We don’t want her birthday swallowed up by wrapping paper and ornaments, so Christmas becomes something we celebrate around the 25th instead of directly on it.

This year, Christmas landed on the evening of the 23rd.

That wasn’t part of some big plan — it’s just where life landed. With older kids working different schedules and everyone juggling responsibilities, flexibility has quietly become one of our strongest traditions. So we adjusted. And it worked.

By the time everyone got home from work, the house filled up. Not in a perfectly coordinated way, but the real kind — people arriving at different times, conversations overlapping, jackets tossed over chairs. The good kind of full.

We keep Christmas simple. We still do the “names in a hat” gift exchange. Merriann and I make sure everyone has something to open, and if the older kids want to add extra gifts, that’s up to them. No pressure. Just thoughtfulness.

This year, Big O played Santa, handing out gifts one by one. It slows everything down in the best way. We watch reactions, laugh at bad wrapping jobs, and take pictures we’ll probably rediscover years from now.

And in the middle of it all, we pause.

For us, Christmas is anchored in Jesus Christ. That doesn’t always look polished or perfectly planned. Most years we attend a Christmas Eve service. This year, since we celebrated early, we talked about it at home — simply and honestly — reminding ourselves why the season matters.

Some traditions come straight from our childhoods. From Merriann’s side, there are chocolate oranges cracked open and passed around. From my side, there’s the odd tradition of peppermint sticks stuck into lemons. It’s impractical and definitely not dentist-approved, but it’s familiar. It connects us to family members who started these traditions long before our kids were born.

This year, Christmas also carried a little extra weight.

It’s our first Christmas without my dad — Grandpa T — who passed away just days ago. His absence shows up quietly. In moments where you expect a phone call. In pauses you didn’t plan for. We didn’t try to fix that or rush past it. We let it exist alongside the joy.

That’s what this season has become for us. It is a place where joy and grief can sit in the same room.

The Night before, after the house settled, Merriann and I stayed up wrapping the last gifts. Even though the younger kids are old enough to know how this works, we still sneak them under the tree once things go quiet.

It’s not about keeping secrets anymore. It’s about keeping it family centered.

And that’s what Christmas looks like for us.

It doesn’t follow the calendar. It isn’t perfect. It’s flexible, sometimes emotional, often loud, and deeply ours. It makes room for birthdays, work schedules, faith, loss, and laughter all at once.

We celebrate early. We hold onto traditions. We adjust when we need to.

And somehow, year after year, it still feels like Christmas.

A Whirlwind New Orleans Layover Adventure with Abby (and a Blogging Comeback!)

Sometimes life throws you a little bit of unexpected magic, even on a trip born out of bittersweet circumstances. As my daughter Abby and I traveled from Jackson, Mississippi, from my father’s funeral. We found ourselves with a six-hour layover in New Orleans before our final flight back home to Seattle. Stepping out into that balmy 80-degree New Orleans air after the cooler Southern winter temps felt like a quick tropical escape.

After dropping off our rental car, we hopped into an Uber with a friendly local named Peter, who took us straight to the iconic Court of Two Sisters. Even though I’d been to New Orleans back in high school more than twenty years ago, this was my first time at this particular spot, and it was Abby’s first time in the city altogether. We were pleasantly surprised to find it was a buffet-style restaurant, and we dove right into all the delicious offerings—shrimp étouffée, eggs benedict, and more.

After our meal, we wandered over to Jackson Square, enjoyed the sounds of a live band playing in the street, and of course made a stop at Café du Monde for some iconic beignets. It was the perfect sweet treat and a chance to pick up some holiday gifts in the nearby shops.

Now, I have to mention that this little adventure is also a bit of a milestone for me. This is the first blog post I’ve written in over ten years, and it feels great to be back. Sometimes life has a way of nudging you to start sharing your stories again, and this little New Orleans layover was the perfect inspiration. I hope you enjoyed reading about our spontaneous detour and that you’ll join me for more stories to come.

Sometimes the best travel stories are the ones you never quite planned for—and I’m excited to share many more.

Boys The Destroyers

Hey Everyone, I just wanted to update you on some of the latest destruction happening at the Thames place.  A few months ago we found out that our remodeled travel trailer had a leak again and this time there was no “fixing” it.  So Greg decided that he had a chance to fulfill a lifetime goal of building a “Tiny House.”  He decided to reuse the trailer.  That, of course, means that he somehow needed to hook up the truck to the trailer body via a chain and pulled the cabin off the trailer.

He did it so fast that I didn’t get a chance to take pictures until the damage was done.
But not to be undone, I gave Zeke and Oliver the ok to “dissect” my keyboard.  It was my mom’s old keyboard, and I have been hauling this around for years knowing it probably didn’t work anymore.  We finally pulled it out and tested it, but it was a no go.  I know my mom would be happy to know it had one more educational gift to give as they joyfully ripped it apart.

Charlotte and the kite

Leave a comment Standard

On Monday evenings during the summer, I (Greg) normally play in a church softball league and this year is no different. So before today’s game the church we worship with, decided that we as a church would have a church picnic before the teams played.

Well, a few days ago Merriann and I went to the mall to do our year eye exam. I finished my exam first so while Merriann was in her exam.  The littles and I decided that we would walk around to kill some time. There we discovered that a national sporting goods sport was going out of business. Let’s say the sales where at the 70 % level, so I decide to buy a few kites that were on sale.

So fast forward to today, I forgot the kites were in the back of the van, were I left them. So since we were at the park early and it was pretty windy day, what better time to pull them out.

Our other kids were running around all crazy but Charlotte was staying close so I thought I would snap a few pictures. Anyway I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as she enjoyed the kite.

End Of The Summer

Leave a comment Standard

With the days cooling down, and football in the air. It is time to call it … Yes my friends it is the end of summer. Yes, it is time to bring out the school books and those dirty looks. Yes, it is time for the days to begin to get short. Time for my favorite time of the year Yes, Fall is my favorite time of the year. Yes, my friends it is time for football, falling leaves, mowing those falling leaves, rain (oh rain I have missed you so), fall hikes, sweaters, and normal hot coffee. Anyway I just wanted to share the last (well maybe the last) picture of the Thames Kids 2015 Summer Edition photo.

This is a short video of footage taken from our trip to the Oregon Coast. I used video from my Gopro, Phantom Drone with a few shots with a canon camera.  With this short video I was practicing a new editing technique. Please let me know what you think of the video.  I hope you enjoy!
