MCI Bus Conversion

Comments 5 Standard

How about we take a break from the trip and see a bit of real life around the Thames house.  A while back we shared the news about our bus conversion.  We (Greg) have been working hard to get things designed and built.  Each step comes with its own unique challenges.  All I can say is thank goodness for internet!  We have spent countless hours looking up designs and options and reading (and trying to learn from) the experiences of others.

722

So, here she is.  Our bus.

640

This is what it looked like when we got it.  The front…

639

The Back.  12 bus seats, one couch, a table, a desk/cooking table, a bookshelf and a full size bed.

647

The first thing for us to do was to remove the overhead luggage racks.  Greg and I both hit our heads a number of times just in the short time we had the bus till this day.  They had to go immediately.  These things are seriously sturdy.  They did not come out without a fight.  But, stubborn as we are, we won.

655

Some of the screws would not come out and needed grinding.

697

One down, one to go.

887

Finally, clear sailing for our heads.  I was amazed at how large it was in there once the bins were removed.  Greg also removed the covering for the air system.  It stuck out from the wall about 6 inches on each side and we needed all the width we could get.  He will be building a cover for the system in the front so we can use it while we are driving but the back will remain wide.

888

I am so thankful Greg took on the job of cleaning out the vents.  30 years of…well…I dont even want to think about it.  Thank you honey for taking (another) one for the team!

139

Next the walls started to get some framing and the back bench/bed is started.  I was playing with some different settings on the camera.  The bench was great at holding still but, not so much with Greg.

076

Now the walls are almost in.  We are so very thankful for the J family for giving us their extra insulation from their house remodel.  We had a propane space heater in the bus as we were in the middle of winter and with each panel of insulation we could feel the bus getting warmer and warmer.  There will be no problem keeping the heat inside this baby!

We blocked out three windows on each side.  This area will be bunks, bathroom and closet.

083

Our first set of bunks.  We decided to have three bunks on each side.  The kitchen counter has been moved in to help us get a better visual of spacing but not in its final home.  The bathroom sink and tub you see here we were not able to use so those have been moved out for better fitting items.

111

Bunks coming along and the bathroom is framed out.  Building inside a bus has many challenges.  Nothing is level nor could you every hope to actually make it level.  “Eyeballing” it is really the only way.  Each and every board is measured separately, cut and checked immediately to be sure its right before you can move to the next board.  The floor is on a slight incline from front to back.  So the hight you had for your 2×4 at one end of the bunk is not the same at the other end of the bunk.  The most fun was the curved ceiling walls.  We made a template for each wall then transferred that to the plywood and cut.  I think only once did that actually work the first time.  Our record for number of cuts on one board was 6.  In and out, in and out.  6 times.  Each cut taking just a fraction of an inch off.

116

Back to front.

143

The kids are very excited about the bunks.  Oliver talks about them constantly.

109

The fridge is moved into position.  And how, might you ask, did you get that in there?  If you’ve ever been in a bus you might remember the doors are not all that big.  But…those windows are.  Yep, pop out a couple pins, remove a window and be sure to invite some strong men over to help.  I am very thankful to Jeff D and my brother Michael for helping load some of these heavier items.

So, that’s all for updates on the bus for now.  I will try to get up to date soon.  There are many more changes to share!

The Family Tree Hunt

Tis the season…

20121201-163855.jpg

Today the Thames family went on our yearly outing to search high and low for the best tree this side of the Nooksack river. So we headed to Fullner’s Tree farm.

The perfect tree was found and everyone took their turn with the saw.

20121201-165610.jpg

This was our first year at this farm and we thought it was great. They have a wood elf named Hans. He is hidden somewhere on the farm and if you find him you get a prize. we didnt take the time this year to search (something about high winds and rain) but next year he better watch out! He has his own cabin and everything.

Bye Fullner’s see ya next year….

Here is a picture of the tree all dressed up…..and of course as soon as the the tree was done the house lights went off. So we could play under the lights.

Merry Christmas…… But don’t forget the reason for the season……

Piggies 2012

Comments 2 Standard

Our piggies have arrived at last!  It was so nice to be able to put them right into their already made pen and not have to build them something first.  It only needed a few touch-ups after the winter.

It’s no surprise they are hanging out in front of the food.  We were running out of pork type names for this batch and since all meat amimals have to have food names we decieded to name them after different cheeses.  The orange one was easy, Cheddar, and the blueish/black stripped one is Blue.  The other two are Feta and Swiss but I cant really tell them apart yet.  They will probably get some freckle spots on them as they get older and we can be sure who we are calling what.

And here’s the handsome Shaun.  We finally go the end of his winter coat off.  His rump got a little stuck on him.  For the most part though his hair came off in one big lump.  It looked like a dead animal in the field. 🙂

And the new animal of the year is Turkeys!  So far they haven’t been the best but we are still liking them.  In the first week we lost 4 of them.  Apparently turkeys are so dumb that sometimes they will just not drink or eat when they are little and of course, die.  We lost another one a few days ago and it may have been attacked by another one but we’re not sure.  So starting with 10 we now only have 5 lest.  Their price just doubled.  We better have mostly boys in there to make up for it.  🙂  That’s the farm update for now.  Shannon and the babies are at a freinds house gorging themselves on 8+ acres of pasture and fertilizing it for them in return.

Eggs How I Love Thee

Comment 1 Standard

We are in the mists of many, many eggs.  Our chickens are laying at full speed and we seem to have one that loves to give us double yokers.  And lest you think I am complaining about the 13 dozen eggs we currently have I am not.  We love these nutrition packed, golden yoked eggs.  But, yes, now that you mention it, we do sell them!   It’s Zoe’s little business.

She has been doing an awesome job taking care of the chickens  and collecting/cleaning the eggs.  As with many of us, she doesn’t like to work alone. That’s what siblings are for!  She will take Zeke out with her and tend to the chickens.  It is so sweet to watch her teach him how to do the different tasks.  And to be fair she told him she would pay him for helping.

Ezekiel is a natural at catching the chickens.  It’s quite funny actually.  He is very relaxed and easy when he goes to get one that I never see him chasing a chicken to catch it.  If I need one I know just who to send out on the job.

The biggest problem?  How many ways can one prepare eggs?  We eat our share (and some of yours) of scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, fried eggs, egg salad, egg, egg, egg, egg, egg.  (sorry, a little Dr. Seuss moment)  I was bummed to find out a quiche only uses 4 eggs.

Quick Tip:  Did you know if you put some baking soda into the water when boiling eggs it makes them easier to peal?  I just learned this nifty little trick(thanks Cindy!)  So, what are your favorite egg dishes?

New Milestones

Comment 1 Standard

Abigail has been growing and changing like crazy.  Her newest trick now is walking.  She doesn’t crawl much any more except if she needs to go really fast.  And just yesterday her first tooth popped through.  And on the top too.  It only took her almost 11 months!

Every time I tried to get a picture she would fall over laughing.  She has gotten a bit picky about her food.  Well, not the food itself but rather the method in which she has to eat it.  She doesn’t like the baby food consistency.  None of my kids have.  And she wants to do it herself as most of my kids have.  It makes it a bit challenging to get a variety in her diet.  Applesauce is the one thing she will almost always eat.  Oliver on the other hand likes to eat whatever she doesn’t.  Seems he likes his food pureed now.

Afro Brothers

Sometime back in November the kids and I were visiting a friend.  The boys were sporting their freshly shaven heads.  Knowing Greg was in charge of their hair she said,  “What?  He’s not even going to let it grow for winter!”. Later, I relayed the story to Greg to which he responded “Fine, I won’t cut their hair till summer!”  And he hasn’t.

So the boys are working on their fros.  They get their hair done right along with Zoe.  It has gotten to the length now where it is getting hard to put some of their shirts on.  Zeke’s hair especially acts a little like Velcro.

Oliver’s is a bit crazy first thing in the morning.

Where's my baby??

Comment 1 Standard

Abigail has been changing so much so quickly.  She seemed to go from my little baby to this crawling, climbing, tackling, clapping, babbling little girl.  Where did my baby go?  I know I have asked this question as each little baby has made this change but with each child this change is more and more precious.  Its no wonder people have a dozen of ’em.

Abigail loves to wrestle.  Greg will be wrestling with the other kids and she charges right over not willing to miss out of the action.  Oliver is her favorite target and he loves it.  He needed someone to wrestle with I just wasn’t expecting it to be the 9 month old baby!

She has also turned vacuuming into an sport.  As soon as I start up the vacuum she either charges for the nearest particle on the floor and I have to beat her too it or she charges for the vacuum and I have to quickly maneuver around her.  Today I was surprised as she joined the kids in their favorite vacuum game.  They love it when I chase them with the vacuum.  (I know, I wonder how my floors get cleaned at all.  Those kids move pretty fast and I’m sure there’s not much time for vacuum to actually do its job.)  As I turned it on the screams start and all able kids run to the stairs for safety and not far behind was Abigail squealing and moving as fast as her little knees would take her.  So cute.

Winter has arrived

The snowman hat is one I knitted a few years ago.  I started it while pregnant with Ezekiel and finished it after his 2nd birthday.  It was my first and last hat.  It’s huge.  Really huge.  But it fits this snowman perfectly.  His head was made from a 3 gallon bucket.

Winter has finally arrived!  Monday Zoe was outside all day.   I was mean and made her wait until it was light outside before she went out.  About 8am she was in the snow and stayed out until 2:00pm.  At one point I served up some hot chocolate and asked her if she wanted some.  She hesitated saying “I do but….”  I assured her she could go back outside when she was done but she asked if she could have it outside.  Sure, why not.  Zeke was even enjoying it this year which Zoe enjoyed greatly.  What a difference snow pants make.  Oliver played outside for a little bit but was also happy in our nice warm house.  Tuesday gave us more snow and Zoe was out in it again trying to use up all the snow.  She started using a bucket to pack the snow in and made a tall snowman and Snow City complete with sky scrapper.  And what did Abigail decide she needed to do while I was outside taking some quick shots?

Pumpkin Party

Comment 1 Standard

I love pumpkins!  So what better way to enjoy pumpkins even more than by having a Pumpkin Party.  I’m so glad to have friends willing to party for reasons such as this.  Today was our first annual Pumpkin Party.  We started by, of course, getting slimy and sticky gutting out some pumpkins.

Next we headed outside for a pumpkin hunt.

Working as a team the kids read clues and searched for the pumpkins hidden throughout the yard.

Victory!  All pumpkins were safely found.

And two little girls love to pose.

After the hunt we came inside to enjoy pumpkin dip, pumpkin bread with pumpkin butter, pumpkin scones and pumpkin coffee.  Lets just say YUM!  We had a blast and plans are already in the works for next year.
