Summer Fun
Leave a comment StandardI am going to attempt to update some of our summer fun and projects. They won’t be in any particular order or anything…that would be too much like being organized. But, at the end of it all you will hopefully see the things we have been up to.

One of our first projects this summer was collecting fire wood. We are so excited to have not just one but TWO wood burning fire places for heat this winter. I love wood heat. We have a wood shed in the back that Greg wanted to fill. It proved to be a lot larger than it looked and although it isn’t full we have quite a bit in there. Many days were spent jumping in the truck as soon as Greg got home (usually with a packed dinner to keep kids lasting as long as possible), cutting wood, loading wood and hauling back as quick as possible to get tired and cranky kids (and adults) into bed.
Some other places we went for wood were more fun for the kids and I. Poor Greg still had to work. We found a great campsite on the river and the kids played in the water and mud.
We did check in and help when needed. Zoe appointed herself photographer and helped us capture the moments.
And what 5 year old photographer can resist the self portrait.
We had a lot of fun working as a family. Zoe was awesome playing with her brothers and helping to keep Oliver happy. Zeke was always eager to help us load wood. He would head over to a log that probably weighed more than he did and get so mad when he couldn’t pick it up. Fortunately, when we pointed him to some wood he could carry it was happy and started working away.
Apple Cider
Comment 1 StandardA couple weeks ago we headed to Padilla Bay with some friends to check out their cider press class. It was not a pretty day in our neck of the woods. Dark and rainy…but with some rain jackets, boots and umbrellas we were ready. When we arrived, however, we were surprised to find the sun shining! It was a beautiful sunny fall day. We were all the more in the mood for some good ol’ cider.

This was one of the best parts. After pressing all the juice out the apple bits are understandably packed in the press. Our guide just got done telling the kids they couldn’t push the apples out because it was so packed. Well, that was all Zoe needed to hear. I mean, look at that face…determination, some force and…

…voila! Satisfaction.

The last thing to do before trying some cider was to plant an apple tree of course! The parents were also asked if anyone wanted to buy the tree. This particular tree will be “planted” 8 more times before it is available for someone to purchase for their own yard. We had a lot of fun getting out in the beautiful fall air and learning a little in the processes. I think we’ll be visiting again. We even planned a camping trip for next year.

Oh, and for those of you that are wondering…no baby yet.

Camping in Winthrop
Comments 2 StandardTowards the end of September we took our last family camping trip of the year. We headed back to the Winthrop area for some good ol’ free camping. September turns out to be a great month to go. All those poor public school kids back in school. We almost had the whole place to ourselves. Plenty of room for Zoe to ride her bike, dig holes and practice her fire pit building skills. The best part…I actually remembered to take pictures this time! It only took me all summer but I finally got it.

Don’t worry. We didn’t actually use this fire pit (much to Zoe’s disappointment) There was a nice pit already set up for us. Evening s’mores are sometimes a little harder for us to get going for some reason so this time we decided s’mores after lunch would be perfect.

Did you notice the big spread next to Greg? Let me give you a close up.

Oh Yeah! We went all out this trip. There was a great waterfall just down from our site that we visited almost every day. We finally got a family photo on one of our trips. We tried to get the camera set up to get more of the waterfall but it was not working. So Greg just held the camera out. I have never been able to do this and actually get everyone in the picture. Greg has a great talent for this type of photography. (Is there a name for it? There should be.)

We really enjoy camping in this area. It’s not too far from home, the weather is great and the area is beautiful. This time we went the river was a bit calmer so the kids were actually able to play in it (freezing as it was) and search for frogs and fish.

And this is the beautiful evidence of our fun and successful camping trip. I am so thankful the Lord has blessed us with the resources, time, and ability to get so many camping trips in this year. It was all we were hoping it would be for our family. Goodbye camping season…We’ll see you next year!

Camping in Winthrop
Leave a comment StandardOur camping adventures in May took us just outside Winthrop to Chewuch. Our campsite was perfect. We stayed in National Forest grounds which is way cheaper than the state parks. A lot of the sites were free but we were camping with some tenters that needed bathrooms so this place was $12 a night. About 1/3 the cost of the state park. Even though the weather was on the hotter side in the afternoon we had a wonderful tree covering to keep us cool.

We camped with three other couples. One of which has a daughter around Zoe’s age. It was wonderful for the girls to have each other to play with. Although we have known this family for many years and our daughters have known each other all their lives, this was the longest they had been together all day every day. Their personalities matched beautifully. It was a wonderful and relaxing weekend. One day the guys went shooting. Another, the two dads took the girls out for a father daughter afternoon and the moms and babies slept (wonderful). This was our little camp site. Two trailers, two tents, eight adults and 4 children.

Our last day there we headed to Lake Pearrygin. I still thought the water was cold but that was not going to stop Zoe from taking full advantage.

As usual Ezekiel was a bit suspicious of the whole thing to begin with.

But he soon warmed up to he idea.

We visited and played for a while and then headed to the SBCC Olympics. They had a rope obstacle (running through 3 turning ropes without touching), a run/hop relay race, fill the bucket relay, Kick Your Shoe (going for distance) Simon Says, and of course…tug-a-war.
Saturday night after singing around the campfire they handed out Gold, Silver, and Bronze metals. Zoe’s team won the Bronze! She ran up front to receive her metal and came running back so excited. “Mom! Look! What’s this for!”
She even found a dog willing to follow her around for a while. I have learned that Zoe is more of a dog person than a cat person. Not that she doesn’t LOVE cats…she does. But, sometimes I think she loves them a little too much. But, she does great with dogs!
