Abigail turns 2!

Comment 1 Standard

Last week we celebrated Abigail’s 2nd birthday. We started our day at Jump Zone and then returned home for cake and presents with dad. Birthdays are much loved in this house. Zoe and the boys have been looking forward to and making preparations for Abby’s birthday since November when Oliver’s birthday was over. It was a long time coming. Needless to say, they lavished her with gifts and love on her special day.

An amazing transformation happens at 2. She quickly went from my little baby to a big independent girl. She is very much the girly girl. Already loving shoes, clothes and having her hair made pretty. She loves to talk and sing and is constantly coming up with new phrases that I don’t expect to hear from her. It has been such a joy to watch the relationships between each child grow. The way they interact together. God has created each one so uniquely and with each passing day I am more amazed.

Here are a few shots from the day. They are from the iPad so not the best but they capture the memory all the same.

Spring is here for real now

Comment 1 Standard

This morning met us with a great surprise. Shannon, our ewe, finally had her babies! So far I have seen both of them nurse and she is attentive to both. I am hopeful she will continue to care for them both. We have kept our distance for the time being until they are a bit more settled. I believe one is a girl but I’m not sure about the other.

New Projects

Comment 1 Standard

Today was a beautiful sunny day around here. Last minute a friend asked if they could could come play. Of course! Having friends over always means more time playing outside and I told her I had a project for us to do while she was here. I was so excited to do this one. It was one of those Pinterest posts that I wasn’t sure I would ever complete but today we did!

20130311-212259.jpg

20130311-212554.jpg

It all started with an outside dining table that was here when we moved in. I liked it at first but soon got it he way on the porch and became one more flat surface it had to keep clearing. For the last year and a half or so it has been moved from one place to another just trying to keep it out of the way from our many other projects. It finally it landed in the “for the dump” pile. But then Pinterest. I had a new purpose for the now slightly rotted table.

20130311-212649.jpg

We took it apart, cut it up, and pieced it back together. It has now become our sensory table. We have plans for water play, rice play, corn play maybe even noodle play! The possibilities are endless.

20130311-212703.jpg

Some of our methods may have been a little unconventional but in the end it is just what I was wanting and it saved the table from the dump. All the wood was reused and the only thing I have to buy is totes. (The ones pictures go in our playroom). Another exciting day completed.

Back on the Farm

Leave a comment Standard

Here’s a little update on our farm and how things progressed this winter.

038

We still have our chickens.  The site of chickens running towards you is hilarious.  They have been doing great laying over the winter.  We never did put out a light but they kept laying 5-8 eggs on average.  I was impressed.

040

We got our piggies early this year!  Say hello to Pepperoni, Deli and Hot Dog.  We talked about raising winter pigs so we wouldn’t have to worry about them while traveling over the summer or the smell in the warmer months.  Then we found a guy that had 3 month old pigs.  Score!  We usually get pigs at 2 months so that was one less month we had to feed them.

045

I love it when they line up like little sausages!

This year we decided to put the pigs in a different pen and use theirs for our larger garden items.  Corn, squash and what-have-you.  This also gave them a little more space and new ground to till.

047

Each year we try out a new feeding system for the pigs.  This “clean-looking one is this years.  So far so good.

050

We still have our sheep Shawn and Shannon.  At least for now.  Shannon is pregnant again and we are waiting for lambs.  Our very loose figure is mid March.  I am really hoping she is a better mama this year and takes care of both of them, should she have twins.

051

Pregnant sheep have those hard to reach places too!

As soon as the babies are born Shawn will be finding a new home.  His purpose at the moment is just company for Shannon.  We had our experience with a ram and are now done.  I think if we had more land and more ewes for him to keep track of I wouldn’t mind keeping him but for now we are thinning out the farm.  When the babies are done nursing Shannon will also be looking for a new home (sooner if she’s not a good mama).

057

She gets extra lovey when she’s close to her due date.

We are done keeping them over the winter.  If we want lambs we will just get some in the spring.  We will also be sending them all over to our friends property to gorge themselves on the pasture over the summer.  Tis the season of simplifying!

065

070

Hey! Did I ever mention I got a barn!  A red one.  I love, love, love it.  It has two stalls on the pasture side and storage on the other for hay and grain.  It has already needed repairs as Shawn was using it for target practice but she held her own pretty well.  It will be so great to be able to keep chicks in there when we need to freshen our flock.

MCI Bus Conversion

Comments 5 Standard

How about we take a break from the trip and see a bit of real life around the Thames house.  A while back we shared the news about our bus conversion.  We (Greg) have been working hard to get things designed and built.  Each step comes with its own unique challenges.  All I can say is thank goodness for internet!  We have spent countless hours looking up designs and options and reading (and trying to learn from) the experiences of others.

722

So, here she is.  Our bus.

640

This is what it looked like when we got it.  The front…

639

The Back.  12 bus seats, one couch, a table, a desk/cooking table, a bookshelf and a full size bed.

647

The first thing for us to do was to remove the overhead luggage racks.  Greg and I both hit our heads a number of times just in the short time we had the bus till this day.  They had to go immediately.  These things are seriously sturdy.  They did not come out without a fight.  But, stubborn as we are, we won.

655

Some of the screws would not come out and needed grinding.

697

One down, one to go.

887

Finally, clear sailing for our heads.  I was amazed at how large it was in there once the bins were removed.  Greg also removed the covering for the air system.  It stuck out from the wall about 6 inches on each side and we needed all the width we could get.  He will be building a cover for the system in the front so we can use it while we are driving but the back will remain wide.

888

I am so thankful Greg took on the job of cleaning out the vents.  30 years of…well…I dont even want to think about it.  Thank you honey for taking (another) one for the team!

139

Next the walls started to get some framing and the back bench/bed is started.  I was playing with some different settings on the camera.  The bench was great at holding still but, not so much with Greg.

076

Now the walls are almost in.  We are so very thankful for the J family for giving us their extra insulation from their house remodel.  We had a propane space heater in the bus as we were in the middle of winter and with each panel of insulation we could feel the bus getting warmer and warmer.  There will be no problem keeping the heat inside this baby!

We blocked out three windows on each side.  This area will be bunks, bathroom and closet.

083

Our first set of bunks.  We decided to have three bunks on each side.  The kitchen counter has been moved in to help us get a better visual of spacing but not in its final home.  The bathroom sink and tub you see here we were not able to use so those have been moved out for better fitting items.

111

Bunks coming along and the bathroom is framed out.  Building inside a bus has many challenges.  Nothing is level nor could you every hope to actually make it level.  “Eyeballing” it is really the only way.  Each and every board is measured separately, cut and checked immediately to be sure its right before you can move to the next board.  The floor is on a slight incline from front to back.  So the hight you had for your 2×4 at one end of the bunk is not the same at the other end of the bunk.  The most fun was the curved ceiling walls.  We made a template for each wall then transferred that to the plywood and cut.  I think only once did that actually work the first time.  Our record for number of cuts on one board was 6.  In and out, in and out.  6 times.  Each cut taking just a fraction of an inch off.

116

Back to front.

143

The kids are very excited about the bunks.  Oliver talks about them constantly.

109

The fridge is moved into position.  And how, might you ask, did you get that in there?  If you’ve ever been in a bus you might remember the doors are not all that big.  But…those windows are.  Yep, pop out a couple pins, remove a window and be sure to invite some strong men over to help.  I am very thankful to Jeff D and my brother Michael for helping load some of these heavier items.

So, that’s all for updates on the bus for now.  I will try to get up to date soon.  There are many more changes to share!

Avilla Beach

Comment 1 Standard

After leaving Anahiem we were on our way to San Francisco.  Its a bit of a drive though so we stopped off in the Avilla Beach area for an overnight.  This was one of our best out-of-the-blue stops.  We camped next to a couple that, noticing the bikes on the back, directed us to a bike trail just down from the campsite that rode down to the beach.  What a perfect way to end a day in the car before starting dinner.  The trail was an easy 3 mile ride, almost all flat, down to the beach.  A huge sandy beach.

504

507

509

Toby did noot want to move from this spot!

Dogs are allowed durring certian hours of the day and we arrived just at the right time for Toby to head down with us.  He, of course, thought we were trying to kill him forcing him to run 3 miles!  Little did he know he would have to run back as well.

511

The little town of Avilla

516

522

More trouble for Toby. An ‘unexpected’ wave actually got him wet!  Greg feels terrible.  Really.  He does.

As the sun started setting we headed back to camp.  If forced to spend more time here I would be OK with that.

And On To Anaheim

Comment 1 Standard

We left Legoland and headed to Anaheim. Right across the freeway from Disneyland. What this meant for us was being able to see the fireworks show each night. This was a shorter 2 night stay for us. The first night was just getting the trailer settled, dinner and bed for an early morning. We were relatively close to Grace Community Church where John MacArthur is pastor and we were excited for the opportunity to visit.

After church we were in need of refueling and headed downtown Hollywood looking for this…

404

I was first introduced to Chick-fil-a in Louisiana. Mmmmm. With our stomachs growling and the kids eating their arms off we started to drive into the lot. They. Were. Closed. NOOOOOO!!!!! Of course they were. It was Sunday. It had been so long and we had forgotten. Next time Chick-fil-a. If you haven’t head Tim Hawkins Chick-fil-a song you must check it out.

The next main attraction for this area was Medieval Times Dinner & tournament . This turned out to be way more fun than I was expecting. This was not just a tournament between knights but an entire theatrical production.

438 437

Upon entering you are assigned a knight to cheer for. I’m sure you guessed it right. We were given the Red Knight.

449

441 448 457 453

Abigail, Sweet little Abigail would not sit down. She was too busy standing on my lap screaming for our knight.

467 470

During dinner there are performances by a number of different people, horses and falcons.

479

And because I know some of you are wondering. This was the main course of our dinner. Served Medieval style.

481

Then there is a huge gap in pictures and you now see us at the end. It was really hard to take pictures during the actual jousting. Oliver and Abigail were on our laps and there was so much cheering and action we had to put the camera down. No one got bored at this event.

483

Zoe and Ezekiel were excited to meet the Red Knight and the “bad guy.” Oliver decided to opt out of this one. He was, understandably, a bit sceptical.

484

Zoe was excited to see the Red Knights shield had a lion on it. Just like Aslan.

Carlsbad, Ca AKA LegoLand…

Comment 1 Standard

We left our campground in San Diego and headed to Carlsbad for a day at…

Ezekiel was not convinced these giant Lego people were OK

This was the ‘line’ for the rides.  Parents held places while kids created.  The kids loved it!

Benefits of having a tall sister.

264

277

Both Zoe and Ezekiel went through the Legoland Driving School.  Zoe was very careful except for driving on the wrong side of the road but she realized quickly and corrected.  Ezekiel decided it was safer to follow the yellow line like a train.  He was very focused.

266

We headed back to the trailer for lunch and to change into our swim gear.  Then it was off to the water.  On a side note…they have a whole water park section we thought was included in our tickets.  Turns out we were wrong.  It would be extra.  Decked out in our swim wear and melting in the sun we decided to visit more of the park before deciding if we wanted to enter the lines of the water park.  I am so glad we did!  Just around the corner was a whole water section and only a couple of the rides had lines.  Most of it was more of a Great Wolf Lodge type structure.  A majority of our day was spent here.

  334

335

 333

319

It took a lot of courage for Oliver to make it over to this slide.  Like the Great Wolf Lodge they have a bucket that dumps water.  He freaks out over that.  When the bell dings before the dump he is on guard.  Greg got him over to this slide a little ways from the bucket and down he went!

322

Seconds after this photo the bucket dumped and this part of the slide was within range.  Poor Oliver.  He never went back.

302

This was more his speed.

305

Dumping water on his brother.

Don’t you just love little kids in sprinklers?

We ended our day with Miniland.  This was one of Abigail’s favorite areas.

San Diego – The Zoo

Leave a comment Standard

(This post was from Our Homeschool Trip in September 2012.)

Who can go to San Diego and not visit the San Diego Zoo? Not us! This was the next place for us to hit. We didn’t know it when the tickets were purchased but they included the Skyfari and Guided Bus Tour which, as we discovered, are a must if you actually want to see most of it.

023    024

Our fist stop was Discovery Outpost.  Guess what we found?  It’s a Fossa!!!!!

033  060

Next we rode the Skyfari to the arctic and got more awesome pictures of these cute kids we found.

 065 076

Then back to the woods for a Camp Critters Show!

115 106

This was a highlight for Zoe. Many different animals were brought out including a cheetah which is her favorite animal.  Interestingly enough this white dog is a companion animal for the cheetah.  It seems the cheetah is much more relaxed when he’s around.  Good thing.  Given the look of this relaxed cheetah I would hate to see him without his buddy.

095  094-001

And check out these awesome macaw pictures Greg got!

166 168

183 184

This orangutan will forever be a best memory from this trip.  While Oliver was standing near the glass the orangutan ran straight to him (Oliver staggered back a bit not sure he would stop) and put on the best show around.  Laying down, climbing the bamboo, tricks with a banana leaf.  He let out all the stops.  All for little Oliver.

213 202

201 194

Greg put together a video of other pictures from this day.  He asked that I choose some favorites and write a little about the day.  I think he may have said three pictures?  Uh, well.  It was really hard for me to narrow it down to what you see.    I hope you enjoy the show.

Hello OP Otter! 002

Hello OP Otter!  This was a big step for Zeke.  He wouldnt stand for a photo but he did want to give OP a hug.  Such a sweet little man!

Lets ride the Manta!!

118-001

I am soooo not a roller coaster person.  Early on in Zoe’s life Greg started grooming her to experience the thrill of the ride.  She is now tall enough to ride pretty much anything and Greg couldn’t be happier to finally have someone to go with.  I lost track of the number times they rode Manta.  Going in September has its advantages…no lines.  They didnt even have to get off the ride between runs.  One thing I liked about the ride was it went over a large section of the park.  The littles and I sat by the flamingoes watching them go round and round and round. Just the way I like to experience Manta.

119

One of my favorite animals is the Orca.  They show was great.  We sat at the very edge of the wet zone not nowing how wet it would get.  After sitting there in the blazing sun before the show we consittered getting a little closer.  By the end we were still completely dry and extreemly hot.  Next time we’ll get a bit closer.

046

These are some beautiful and amazing creatures.

These sea lions cracked us up.  This one sat at the edge begging for fish which you could by and feed them with.  We enjoyed watching these silly things.  Next time you see Zoe you should ask her what a begging sea lion sounds like.
